Featuring: Costa Rican/Uruguayan couple Marlo Trejos and Andrea Summa. The home: The original building dating from the early 1900's was redesigned as a holiday retreat by architect Diego Montero. Garzon, in Uruguay's hinterlands. The style: The use of rustic low maintenance materials including concrete were intentionally left raw so that the imperfections and roughness lend the house its juxtaposing rustic/modern moody character. The use of shots of colour- a cobalt blue swimming pool, fire engine red window frames and doors offset the black and white courtyard tiles with original well and the grey of the concrete floor, walls, counters and bathrooms bringing spaces to life. Extra added attractions; tile carpets made from original hand painted tiles, "constructivism" rough timber shelving, and a landscaped garden planted with 30 different varieties of fruit trees. Diversely unique, this house stands apart.
